  • What the Open Source
    Associate, Foo Associates

Background (or, you’re already using more open source than you know): Discuss how prevalent Open Source is, from the embedded device (gas meters) to small devices (iPhone) to desktops (Mac OS X) to servers (Linux) to the web (Google, Yahoo!) to the enterprise (IBM, HP, Oracle, Sun) to the Internet itself. Introduce the term Free Software.

…but what is it?: Like soylent green, Free Software is made of people. Specifically people cooperating under the permissions granted by Free/Open licenses over the Internet. Participants range from individual hobbyists to megacorps. It works as a development method because it lets large groups of people work together to develop resources that they all need (and that they can further customize). It is important because software is such a key part of modern life - our cars, banks, supermarkets, hospitals, courts and more are software-dependent institutions.

… but how do programmers get paid?: The same way that dentists, doctors, lawyers, etc. get paid. For using their expert skills.

… where do I get it and who supports it?: Lists of resources and simple recommendations.
