Episode #93

Can I Trust Online Backup?

On Leo’s recommendation, I am using Carbonite (I also looked at Mozy). I love the ease with which you can back up your files but am leery allowing it to back up anything more than pictures, videos and purchase music. In other words, can I trust Carbonite enough to back up Microsoft Money files and other sensitive financial information?

Suzie, Baltimore, MD

Carbonite and Mozy (and most other online backup sites) encrypt your data so it’s completely safe, even if your uploads get intercepted.

Whether you trust an online site with your personal data or not, you should ALWAYS make a backup of it in another location, too, especially if it’s incredibly important information. Seriously consider buying a USB key to store backups of your tax information, your accounting info, etc, especially if it’s all only in digital form. Then you can put a backup into a safe, a safety deposit box, or a safe place at work. If you’re worried about the security of those, there are even encrypted USB keys that require you to enter a password before you can access the private data.
