Episode #91

Creating Disk Images

After doing some research online for a software title that will allow me to backup my entire hard disk, with the ability to restore the disk, (I think this is called ‘cloning’) I read where Leo recommends a product called Drive Snapshot. I like what I’ve read about Drive Snapshot, except for one thing - it appears to require a floppy drive in order to perform a system recovery. My question is: what program would Leo recommend that will enable me to restore via DVD or better yet, via external hard drive?

There’s a document at the DriveSnapshot.de site that explains how to create other types of emergency boot media, for users who don’t have a floppy drive on their system. This includes CD, DVD, or other hard drives. You can see how to do it here: http://www.drivesnapshot.de/en/bootcd.htm

If you wanted to boot from an external drive, it’s important that your computer can handle booting from USB — if it’s reasonably new that’s probably not a problem, but older machines often don’t have that option available in the computer’s BIOS. To check if your computer is capable of booting from external drives, go into the BIOS setup immediately after pressing the power button on your machine (usually the DEL key or the F2 key will take you into “SETUP” mode but check the startup screen for the necessary key sequence). Then go into your boot menu and see if USB is listed as a option in your boot sequence…if not, you’ll want to stick to CD or DVD for this process.
