Recovering Deleted Files

My 120GB sata HD crashed after i tried to install Ubuntu on a partition and i have been able to install xp on a 80GB in the same pc but i am unable to find a program (free) that would give me access to the files still on the HD so i can take the essentials and reformat the drive to start all over again…so far the programs i have found are try free and pay to retrieve the fileseive them so the hd can be reformatted and reloaded..currently i am running win xp home on a 2nd 80GB in the same pc…i have access to the 120GB hd but not the files…is there a free file that i could use without having to pay 50$ for 1 use…any ideas would be appreciated!

It depends on what happened to your files. If you want to try to recover deleted files the only decent free program I know if is PC Inspector from pcinspector.de. It will only recover deleted files from Windows formatted hard drives. It sounds like you have files lost on a Linux file system. To recover these files from Windows try the free R-Linux: http://www.data-recovery-software.net/Linux_Recovery.shtml. If the drive can’t be read at all try the excellent, but not free, Spinrite from www.grc.com.
