I was wondering if there is a way to convert my DVD players output from component to HDMI without going through an A/V tuner?

Sure is, but they’re expensive. Gefen offers a product that converts component video and digital audio to HDMI, for $249 (http://www.gefen.com/kvm/product.jsp?prod_id=4457) — you may be further ahead to simply buy a newer upconverting DVD player with HDMI already onboard…in fact, it’s probably going to be less expensive.
