Episode #80
I have 3 printers - HP 1012, Pixma 750, Samsung CL300 attached to a windows (XP-SP2) desktop via USB. The desktop is connected via cable to wireless router. I connect to the network via Wifi from my notebook. I was able to setup the Samsung to print no problem from the MacBook via the network. I have downloaded the up to date Mac drivers for the other two printers from the mfg websites to my Macbook. when I try to install the HP and the Canon on the Mac it does not see the drivers and they do not have these two printers listed in their printer setup list. I have spent over 2 hours on the phone with Mac - 1 great lady who really tried to help and one snippy twerp who basically said - Windows - not my Job. So where do I turn but to Leo for help - HELP By the way all these printers work wirelessly from my HP Pavillion and work when connected via cable to the Macbook -

Network printing from a Mac to a printer connected to a PC can be challenging. In this case you’re having trouble with printers that don’t have appropriate Mac drivers. Foomatic to the rescue.
You might be able to get them working using the CUPS system and the appropriate CUPS driver - these are generic drivers designed for use with Linux, but they also work on Macs, since OS X also supports CUPS. The Foomatic system makes this fairly easy.
For example, for the HP try these steps (from the forums at MacOSXHints.com, http://forums.macosxhints.com/archive/index.php/t-28606.html)
1) Go to http://www.linuxprinting.org/macosx/foomatic/. Download both the foomatic-RIP and the esp Ghostscript dmg files, mount them, and install the contents.
2) Go to http://www.linuxprinting.org/show_printer.cgi?recnum=HP-LaserJet_1012. Next to “Recommended driver: pxl1010″ click the “download PPD”. Take the file and drop it into the folder /Library/Printers/PPDs/Contents/Resources/en.lproj.
3) Open Print Center and click the “Add” button to add a new printer. Use the driver “HP LaserJet 1012 Foomatic/pxl1010 (recommended)”
Similar steps should work for the Samsung (it’s also in the foomatic database).
