We run a "newscast" from our high school in Nova Scotia. We are using Live Channel Pro from Channel Storm to do it, on an iMac G4 1GHz. We have a television modulator and a CCTV system. We’re wondering if there’s a better software option or even a cheap hardware option? Any help would be appreciated!

Sounds like you’re doing pretty well with inexpensive (and old) hardware. Unless you’re willing to upgrade the Mac you’re best off sticking with what you have.
If you go to an Intel Mac or a Windows machine you can use Wirecast 3 - an excellent $300 video production program which will give you very professional results.
