Show Notes: Episode 75

  • Creating 3D Models with a Desktop Scanner
    Founder, Pixel Corps

3D Scanning has been around for a long time but it’s usually very expensive. This era is coming to an end with products like Next Engine’s Desktop Scanner. It costs about $2500 (about $500 more than my first 2D scanner in 1994) and it scans 3D objects!

You simply put the object in front of the scanner and hit go. The scanner spins the model and uses lasers to get 3D Slices. From there, it stitches these scans together to form a full, 3D Model. You can then take these models into a 3D package and animate them. Pretty spiffy…

  • Web Workshop (Foxton Kennels)
    Web designer, Creative Director, hopstudios.com

In today’s show I review Foxton Kennels (patspage.sasktelwebsite.net)

    My suggestions include:
    • You need some text on your home page, if only for search engines to use when people try to find you. This is especially important because you don’t talk directly about what it is you do anywhere.
    • Make the general information pages about breeds of dogs secondary to the puppies pages.
    • Don’t create pages that are one big image, especially that simulate links but aren’t clickable
    • You need some text or information on the puppy pages telling people how they can acquire a puppy!
    • Great that you have a links page, but you need to let people know why they should click on a link, and identify the site.
    • Believe it or not, but better page naming will also help you with search engine relevancy, as will putting your name in the title of your page.

  • Lightroom vs Photoshop
Electronics Engineer, Color Scientist, Teacher, Speaker

I will have a copy of each program on my computer and will give a quick overview of Photoshop, Bridge, ACR, and Lightroom.
Key Points of Discussion with Leo and Demo

Lightroom is a meta data editor…Explain what this means.
Photoshop is an image editor…Explain what this means.
Bridge with Adobe Camera RAW can do most of what Lightroom does.

    Which is Right for Me?

Lightroom is best for a photojournalist or wedding photographer.
They deal with large numbers of images.
They need to adjust exposure and tone and print.
    They do not alter content.

Photoshop is best for commercial photographers or fine art photographers.
All adjustment features in Lightroom are in Bridge and Adobe Camera RAW.
Photoshop allows for stitching, compositing, layers, local area adjustments, text layers, and many more image editing features.
Both can do slide shows, web pages, image data base management, automation.
