Don’t count on standard DVDs disappearing from the stores any time soon — the uptake on the new high-definition formats is increasing, but standard definition DVDs will continue to be available for a while.

As for converting your old DVDs to one of the new formats, there’s no real advantage or need to do this…most of the new high definition DVD players out there will play old standard-definition DVDs just fine, and they’ll even upscale the quality through built-in interpolation. In short, there’s no real value moving your old movies over to Blu-ray except for archiving purposes.
