Episode #72

Wireless Webcam

I would like to get a recommendation for a wireless webcam so I can put up a site for our turtle “Henry” live on the internet. My husband, Mike is an elementary school teacher in Sacramento California and Henry was his classroom mascot for many years. Recently, the school district decided to no longer allow live pets at school. Since then Henry has lived in a special enclosure in our backyard. We would like to use a service like Stickam or Ustream to put Henry online so he can rejoin the class.

We’ve had reasonably good experience with the Axis 206W, which connects directly to your WiFi network. The only problem is that to view the webcam, people will need to connect directly to the camera over the internet, as the camera acts as a little webserver. What you have to do is place that camera’s IP address (which you can set manually) onto the DMZ of your wireless router, and then point people directly to the IP address of your router.
