Episode #68

Convert External HD to Mac Extension

I would like to change my PassPort WD 160 to two drives. One for Mac OS Extended(journaled) and the other half for DOS OS 32 bit. Can I then use the Mac drive for Parallels ie Windows Linux etc?

David,

Changing the hard drive to a different format is as simple as going into your Applications folder, then the Utilities folder, and choose the Disk Utility. Select the disk you want to convert, choose Erase and then choose the right file format…in this case MacOS (Journaled). Just make sure you’ve backed up all the data on that drive, because this process will kill all the data on the hard drive you change to the new file system.

If you’re using that other partition for running Windows on your machine using Boot Camp, you may want to hold off formatting from Disk Utility however — use the installer for the operating system instead…it’ll set up the partition’s file structure in the best way (usually NTFS these days…you can’t use MacOS (Journaled) for a Boot Camp partition, but you certainly can if you want to use Parallels instead.
