I had a maxtor harddrive hooked up to my laptop running xp. I switched it over to my dell desktop running xp which i loaded vista upgrade on it. I cam home one day and my external maxtor hardrive was just beeping, and not spinning. At times i can hear it spinning inside but the pc just won’t reconize it anymore. There is just some pics and music but i would like them back. What would be the most cost effective rout to take to recover my data? And i actually bought the external harddrive to keep my files safe.

Unfortunately this sounds like a hardware failure. Fixing these requires a clean room where you can swap the platters into an new mechanism. Companies like Drive Savers do this, http://drivesavers.com but it costs a lot, well over $1000 dollars
