Episode #66

Uninstalling the Unistallable

To complete a case study for my Accounting Information Systems class, we had to install a small software. The case study was completed, corrected and I graduated. I now wish to uninstall the software but I get the following message : Incorrect target operating system. During the 1st attempt to install the software I received this same message. But, my 2nd attempt to install was successful. I imagine I could always manually delete the appropriate directories; but, how do I effectively clean-up the registry and any stray files? Many thanks. PS: I love the new set and format. I do miss the old gang but am getting to know the new people. I appreciate the variety of subjects as well as the expertise and enthusiasm of all who make the show.

Sounds like you installed the program under XP, then tried to uninstall it after upgrading your system to Vista — clearly the uninstaller doesn’t understand what Vista is, thus the error. You might be able to coerce it into running by finding it (look for something like Setup.exe or Uninstall.exe in the program’s folder in the Windows/Program Files folder), right-clicking on it, selecting Properties, and clicking the Compatibility tab. Choose Windows 98 and click OK then try uninstalling.

If it still fails you can use a commercial uninstaller to find the bits and pieces of the program and remove them. Your Uninstaller is free for the first two applications. http://www.ursoftware.com/.
