Nikon’s 10.2 megapixel D40x is a fairly compact consumer-friendly model that has a ton of great features aimed at more casual photographers, without becoming too overwhelming. Because of its consumer focus, the D40x is a much smaller camera than many of the pro-grade models, which means it’s not only easier to hold, it’s also easier to carry around through the day. It also comes with a SecureDigital memory slot instead of CompactFlash — while this will put off pro photographers who have already invested in a number of CF cards, it’s much more convenient for consumers with other devices that already have SD slots, like televisions and PDAs.

When the time came to go digital, Olympus wasn’t weighed down by a bunch of film-based SLR lenses that would have to be compatible with the new digital version — so the company built an SLR that was digital from the ground up…no compromises to accommodate old analogue components. That new design, known as the four-thirds system, meant smaller, lighter and more expensive lenses at the beginning. Now that the price of the lenses has come down and other manufacturers have come on board the four-thirds bandwagon, there’s less reason to be wary of this new type of camera. (The fact that they take great pictures doesn’t hurt either.) The EVOLT E-510 is the newest Olympus digital SLR to use the LiveMOS sensor, which allows you to use the LCD monitor on the back of the camera for lining up your shots. (This is especially convenient when you want to make sure your focus point is exactly right, thanks to the zoom mode incorporated into the LiveView feature.)
