Episode #64
Hi Leo, love your show. Have been watching it since the Call for Help started. My problem is that every now and then my screen goes black (blank) and I can’t seem to get answers from anyone about it, not even the Nvidia guys. They gave up on me a while back. It seems to be worst when I use Firefox so I’m using IE 7 now. Although it happens even when I’m not on line. My system is a AMD Athlon 64 2100, Asus motherboard (A8V) with an Nvidia N6600 video card, 2Gbs of Ram on windows xp sp2. When I asked for help with Nvidia, they told me to use driver 84.21 instead of the latest driver, so I did without any change. It still went blanc especially when I use Skype or Wayn and a lot worst on Firefox. They also told me to download DPC Latency Checker and sure enough, after a bit it spyked and said that “Some device drivers on this machine behave bad and will probably cause drop-outs in real-time audio and/or video streams.” So my question would be “ How do I isolate the device driver that is doing this and correct the problem.” It becomes very agravating to be talking on Skype and all of a sudden the screen just goes blanck. Please help. If you need any more info about my system, please email me and ask away. Thank You in advance and keep up the great work.

First question: is your monitor turning off or is the system itself crashing? If it’s the latter it’s almost certainly the video driver crashing or the card itself overheating.
Test your video drivers by running the DirectX diagnostics (Start?Run type dxdiag). Try changing your display properties (switch from optimal to default, for instance.)
