Episode #59

Buying a Computer for Photography

I got a new camera, Canon Rebel xti. I want to buy a new computer for the main purpose of photography, and stop-go animation. I am leaning towards an Apple computer, but I’m not sure if I should go in that direction. I have a $2000 spending allowance. My question is this: If I buy an Apple Computer, what would be the equivalent to a PC form. ( ie: Does one gig of apple ram equal to the same power as one gig of PC ram?)

There are lots of good reasons to buy a Mac if you’re doing photography. As we’ve learned from Ray Maxwell, the Mac is best for color matching your prints to your screen. To answer your question, Macs and PCs need roughly the same amount of RAM. I wouldn’t consider running Vista without two GB of RAM. OS X will run fine with one GB, but if you’re going to be using Photoshop with large pictures, get as much RAM as your budget will allow. For your budget a 20-inch iMac with two GB of RAM would be an excellent choice.
