Episode #5
I’ve had it…I’ve had too many problems loosing critical data after operating system reinstalls, because of my not knowing the files needed were not saved. I have read that you do not suggest software for computer back ups, Can you provide a list to the standard locations of standard Microsoft data for backing-up. Especially outlook contacts, all email file folders in outlook. Is there a way to check what is saved, to simulate installation on a new operating system?

Outlook is simple. Everything is stored in a single OUTLOOK.PST file. In general, if you back up everything in your user directory - that’s the directory in the Documents and Settings folder that’s got your username - you’ll get all the data you want. I use a service called Carbonite (http://carbonite.com) to automatically and continuously back up this directory online. It’s $50 a year for unlimited storage.
