ICC profile maps device color in RGB to device independent color in CIELAB (this is a model of human color perception).
The “Color Flow of Photoshop” shows how a file coming into Photoshop in Adobe RGB 98 is converted to Lab and then sent to the monitor profile to be converted into Monitor RGB. The Lab data will also go to the printer profile where it is converted to the printer RGB. The printer driver converts to the ink set used in the printer.
