Episode #38

Internet Safety for Kids

My name is Tom Barette and I was supposed to be called by your staff on Wed. 1/17. to ask Leo questions regarding restricting internet e-mail access/security for my 9 and 7 year old girls. However, nobody contacted me. Nonetheless, I still would like my questions answered (via email response would suffice):

1. Is there any way in Internet Explorer 6.0 to limit the websites my kids can have access to browse? I am sure there are certain tools to block websites; I just want a quick and simple solution with looking over their shoulders.
2. How can I restrict incoming or outgoing email (Outlook) to just a few friends we know? I intend to install SpamBeyes to block spam (I use that now).
3. Related Virus protection question…. In our office we have two PCs. One has Norton, the other McAfee. Both were downloaded at different times. Since we are getting our girls more Internet access should we purchase one product for all our computers? If so, can I buy one software package for all 5 computers we have, rather than one license for each? If so, what do you recommend? I am looking for the most efficient solution.

I am on a Windows XP platform with DSL thru SBC.

This is a large and complex problem and ultimately no solution will give you 100% protection. There’s no substitute for parental supervision.

I use a hardware solution called the iBoss (www.myiboss.com) but it’s expensive and can slow the network down. A good software solution for web browsing is Cyberpatrol - you can try it free from www.cyperpatrol.com.

Protecting your child’s email is possible with a number of services like www.kidmail.net.
