Episode #33
I was looking at a website with info on Office 2007 (why when I use OpenOffice.org 2.2) and then something strange happened. I ended up with a file downloaded to my desktop. I didn’t have enough time to get rid of it when it installed in a blink of an eye. I can’t remove it as it keeps telling me that its in use by another program and it affects IE7 badly. The file name is ddcdaaa.dll. I’ve done an Google search and nothing comes about for answers. I’m going to be formatting my computer once the Laptop I ordered for my wife’s Birthday arrives. But all I would like to know is how to get rid of it next time it appears. All “Safe Mode” options do not work.

ddcdaaa.dll sounds like an arbitrary random name made up by a virus process, so that it can’t be easily identified as a bad guy with a Google search. If you don’t have Firefox on your machine you may want to download it and start using it instead of IE7, to prevent these auto-running web nasties. You can also try our usual complement of anti-spyware solutions like Ad-Aware (www.lavasoft.de), Spybot Search & Destroy (www.safer-networking.org) and Microsoft’s Windows Defender (www.microsoft.com/defender). But unfortunately, once these things get onto your system the only way to make sure they’re off is to format the drive and reinstall Windows from scratch.
