Episode #179

Saving Records to CDs

How can I save my old 60′s/70′s 33′s to CD’s?

Brian, Omemee, ON

Sean’s note: If your only goal is simply to convert your records straight to CDs you might want to check out one of the products that has a CD burned built right into a turntable, like the models from Crosley Radio (http://www.crosleyradio.com/prods/ec.html) or TEAC (http://www.amazon.com/Teac-GF-350-TEAC-Turntable-CD-Recorder/dp/B0007LA9...) or the new Ion LP2CD (http://www.ion-audio.com/lp2cd)

If you want to turn your records into digital audio files for use on your iPod, you may want to think about a USB turntable like models from Ion or Stanton. That way you can capture the audio over the USB connection, and then use the bundled software to clean up and slice the files into individual songs. If you already have an old-school turntable you can also get an analogue-to-digital audio converter like ADS Tech’s Instant Music.

If you already have the equipment and you just want to locate software, Audacity is a great choice…it’s free and it’s very powerful.
