Episode #177

Windows Home Server

Leo, I currently backup using a second hard drive in my computer but I want a NAS unit to make another backup. Should I wait until HP releases the SmartMedia WHS NAS in Australia?

Nathan, Sydney, NSW

Windows Home Server is a great product. It’s an inexpensive and easy to use network device for backup and centralized media sharing. If you understand and like Windows it’s a very good choice.

Most other NAS units, like the Infrant I use, are Linux based. They’re not that hard to maintain, but it’s not Windows. I use mine for backup, but most NAS devices now have media server capabilities that support iTunes and Windows Media Player. WHS is more capable out of the box, however, and we’re seeing lots of exciting new plug-ins being written for it. Take a look at the add-ins page for an idea of the variety of capabilities already available. http://www.wegotserved.co.uk/windows-home-server-add-ins/
