Episode #175

Clicking Hard Drive

Whenever I run my PowerBook G4 there is a clicking sound while it is booting and it will not start. When I can make it start it will run for about 2 hours before the clicking sound starts again and my computer completely locks up and i have to manualy turn it off.

If you’re getting this sound when you’re doing very specific things after booting, and it happens every time, you may have a faulty driver that’s causing your system to start making noises through the speakers…hard to tell if you have a notebook sometimes. If it is louder when your volume is up (or when you’re using headphones) it’s probably your computer freaking out because of some conflict. There’s a good chance that you can solve your problem by reinstalling the OS. But if the sound is happening no matter what your volume, and it’s clear that it’s coming from inside your machine, it could be a bad section on your hard drive.

Sean’s note: There’s a really good chance that the clicking is your hard drive…and that clicking means that it’s about to fail. Seriously consider backing up all of your data RIGHT NOW, and then go shopping for a new drive.
