Probably more of a windows habit than anything. Would you know of a way to align desktop icons to the left, without just unsnapping them from the grid and moving them all over manually. (Doing so causes annoyances when you plug in a new drive, insert a cd etc).

You can align them - but not to the left. If you select View→Show View Options from the Finder menu you’ll see that you can arrange icons alphabetically (or by size, kind, etc.) This option will line up the icons to the right side in the sort order you select. I don’t know of any way to automatically get those icons to the left, unless you can find a third party application that does it.
That’s one of the big differences between Macintosh and Windows. Windows has all sorts of customization features the Mac lacks.
