ISO parallels a film term called “ASA”. Essentially, it effects the sensitivity of the sensor. In the old days of film, ASA would use different chemicals that would make it more sensitive at the cost of detail (because there was more grain). ISO rates similarly to ASA but we’re now just talking about gain and sensors. As we artificially more sensitive, we introduce more noise (which looks a bit like the old film grain).
The great thing about digital vs film is that this setting is variable. When we had film, we were stuck with the speed of the film we put into our camera but with digital, the speed can be changed between photos. This means you get great photos outside and in. By opening up your ISO, you can capture many photos without a flash…which often looks much more natural. You may have a grainier image but as technology gets better, much of this will be a thing of the past.

Why is Flash a great tool to create Experimental Art?
Being a very visual tool, the artist can quickly analyze the results of a drawing algorithm and easily make tweaks and changes until they are satisfied with the results. The ability to almost instantaneously see the visual output of your experiementations allows for quick prototyping and very interesting results.
What other tools can you use to create Generative Art?
