What I like most about this site is that the personality of operation comes through – I would feel good purchasing a bird from these folks. They really seem to like their birds, and that comes through in the design. Now let’s get critical.
Frankly, the body text is hard to read on the patterned background for a number of reasons – color, size, alignment, and page width. I’d recommend a hard look at the colors being used for text, both body text and links. It’s all hard to read on this background. If a solid background was used, that would also improve matters. In general, don’t center text of any length. Having an uneven left edge really makes reading the text hard on the eye.
Liquid layouts make text harder to read. A liquid layout is one that expands and contracts to fit the size of the browser window. In this case, it means that the lines of text can get really wide, and this is also hard on the eyes. If you want people to read your text, try to keep it a comfortable width, probably about 600 pixels wide.
I’d reorder the navigation of this site so that the links to other Web sites was the LAST item, and definitely after the Prices and Babies Available items.
Photo galleries are great, and there some tools you can use to make them even better! Love, love, love the bird photos. The photo galleries on this site are what will sell birds. The way they are presented here, however, the user clicks on a thumbnail is taken to the large image. To see the next image, the user must go back to the thumbnail page and click again. It would be great if you could click to the next photo right from the last one. There are all kinds of photo gallery applications on the Web. You could do something quick and easy by creating a slideshow in Flickr and link to it, or install an open source, free, application like zenPhoto. There are also software apps you can buy, like CoffeeCup Photo Gallery.
