Episode #163

Reading Large Memory Cards

I have a number of 4gb SD cards for a digital camera, 1 Toshiba Laptop with a built in SD card reader running XP SP2, 1 desktop with a built in card reader running XP SP2 another Laptop, and 2 different external multi card readers. Regardless of what machine or reader combination I use, I can not get anything to read the 4gb cards. Smaller cards are fine, and if i plug the actual camera into a pc i can read the 4gb cards though it. Is this a limitation of XP? Is there a driver or something that I can install to allow XP to read the 4gb cards?

You need a high capacity card reader. Original SD cards were formatted with FAT-16 and couldn’t get bigger than 2GB. Older readers can only read these cards. The new SDHC cards use FAT-32 and can go up to 32GB, but you’ll need a reader capable of handling FAT-32. Fortunately, you can buy USB SDHC readers very inexpensively. They’ll read both standard SD and the new High Capacity SD cards.
