Episode #163

Changing Folder Icons

My question one is:- If I (create) a new folder in the (HD) folder on the Mac OS/X Desktop. Then (Create and Alias) to that Folder and drag it on the Desktop, there seems to
be no option to change the icon picture or appearance of the alias icon. I can (Right Click) the Alias and change the Font color with the colored buttons, but no option
to change the Icon itself to a custom icon or picture of my choice. In Windows, I can right click a shortcut, and click (change Icon), and then select a .dll icon
Library and you then choose what icon or picture you want. I presumed there would be
Similar on the Mac Desktop to change your icons as well to make them custom.

Panic Software makes a lovely little program called Candybar which lets you customize your system icons to your heart’s content.

Sean’s note: If you want to change the icon for any volume or folder, all you have to do is click on the item, hit Command-I to bring up the info, and then click on the icon in the upper left hand corner. You can replace it with the icon of your choice, either from another folder or application, or using a customized one you can download from elsewhere. Apple has a tutorial on their site with the exact instructions: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=304735

One of the best sites is IconFactory, where you can download a ton of replacement icons, as well as download IconBuilder, which allows you to build your own icons. Check it out here: http://iconfactory.com/home
