Episode #162

Playstation 3 Overseas

Hey all. I have a bit of a BIG problem that I was hoping someone could help me with. After upgrading my PS3 to firmware update 2.1, I can not play any discs any longer, all of which were playable before the firm ware update. A bit of background: I am an American and I purchased the PS3 6 weeks ago in San Francisco California, just before being transferred to Australia for work commitments. As I went to the Sony PS3 shop and talked to the sales person there, he assured me that this would work in Australia, but I would need a power converter, which is fine. I got the player back to Australia, with the NTSC games and Blu Ray discs that I had purchased to go with it, hooked it up and everything was fine. No problems. All the games worked perfectly, and the movies were great as well. (I was a very happy person, and was very impressed with the ease of set up, and was bragging to all my friends how fantastic this machine was UNTIL last week, when I did the required update to firmware 2.0. After this update, I then tried to play a Blu Ray movie, one of which I purchased in the US, and it wouldn’t come up. All I got was the green light on the console, and the water circle “working” in the top right had corner. So I thought it might have something to do with the disc. I then tried a different movie disc to no avail. Thinking this was really strange, I then tried a game that I was playing a few nights before, and I got the same thing. NOTHING!! I can still scroll though the menus and I can see all the things that I have saved to the hard drive. The only ( and most important thing ) is that it is not reading the discs, Blu Ray or my Games. After reading more on a few Playstation forums, NOT THE PLAYSTATION or SONY websites I now realise that my machine has done its update from Australia, and NOT the US, which is the only thing I can think of that can be causing all my dilemas. ( I am also posting this to a BIG WARNING to everyone NOT to install 2.0 or 2.01 if you are not in the country in which you bought the player ) I have tried calling SONY here, and in the US, but they say that this is MY problem and are very unwilling to help me with this issue. (in fact they were really rude, and just kept telling me to send the machine into them in the US, and they would have a look at it.) This is not an option as the postage back the US would be more than the machine is worth. Has anyone else had a simular problem or know of a way that I can reinstall the US version of this firmware? Any help would be fantastic

I would first try to confirm your theory by playing an Australian game or movie in the PS3. If it works then you’re right - you’ve been converted to an Aussie PS3. More likely something went wrong and you need to get your machine fixed. But it’s still under warrarnty at least!

As far as I know PS3 games are NOT region encoded like their PS2 counterparts, so it’s likely the firmware upgrade broke the machine.
