Sean’s note: Newer versions of Windows figure out what computer they’re on by taking a look at the hardware in the computer you’ve installed it on, and pulling various values from the onboard components (with heavy weight given to the networking card, which has a unique hardware address on it). If you’re registering on the same system, you can generally re-activate at least once so long as the hardware configuration hasn’t changed substantially, because the Microsoft Activation Server recognizes that you’re probably reinstalling on the same machine. If you KEEP having to re-activate over and over again, they’re going to start refusing to activate your machine, however.
