I am looking to find a device that will use my wireless network and play video files and music from my home network onto my television. Is there any current devices that would do such a task? Thanks, TJ

Sean’s note: There are quite a number of devices that will do this. My recent favourite is D-Link’s Medialounge DSM-520 player, which can stream audio and video wirelessly from multiple sources around your home network (you have to manually change the source in the settings though), as well as pulling down content from the internet. If you’re currently using iTunes to manage your multimedia content you can also use the AppleTV, which has a hard drive inside so that you can automatically sync pre-selected playlists directly to the AppleTV, so you can avoid buffering issues…but unfortunately it won’t play non-Quicktime video unless you hack it.

While Samsung has already released its combo Blu-ray/HD-DVD player, the company is still releasing standalone players in its original format choice, Blu-ray. This player is an update to the BD-P1200 player, and it largely provides tweaks to the previous design, especially better audio support. It still supports 1080p output, and it boots up far faster than the original Blu-ray players, but it does still have a few of the quirks that the new high definition players sport, like the occasional sluggishness when moving from one part of a menu into another…and this one also is a bit noisy when the pickup changes position. But at this price point — especially since you can find it for less than $300 on sale occasionally — it’s getting a bit hard to resist the call of high def.Shiny
