SEGMENT TOPIC
Changing the world the WikiWay
Activists have used interactive digital technologies (email, irc) to communicate and organize since the birth of the global justice movement at the “Battle of Seatte” in 1999.
Wikis provided more: a democratic space online for distributed collaboration that aligned with movement goals (e.g.open source) and facilitated work flow
Wikis enable collaborative work amongst activists dispersed around the world AND promote the practice of movement values/goals: trust, equality, autonomy, cooperation, mutual aid, democratic communication
So, wiki technology and the “WikiWay” prefigure progressive social change offline e.g. tech Unconferences like BarCamp, WineCamp (“live” wikis based on the same principles of self-organization, openness, trust etc.)
