Episode #143

Anti Virus for Macs

Really enjoy your show. Perennial question - do we need antivirus software for os X and if so which is the best? Some say we do and suggest ClamXav etc. - you have always hinted we do not. What is the current thinking?

ClamXAv only searches for Windows viruses on your Mac. That’s useful if you plan on forwarding suspect files to your PC friends but useless on keeping your Mac virus free. As of this date I know of only one Macintosh virus in the wild and you’d have to work very hard to get it.

I don’t recommend using an AV product on the Mac. I do recommend following sensible security precautions, just like our Windows friends:

1. Operate as a limited user day-to-day
2. Don’t open attachments
3. Be careful about what you download
4. Be very careful when a web site tries to install software on your computer (just say no!)

5. Download and install all OS updates as soon as they are available
