This segment is a review of the Palm Discovery Web site (http://www.palmdiscovery.com).
The main points to critique will be:
- Lack of a strong dominant visual element like a logo
- Cluttered layout
This is a good example of a fan turning a passion into a business opportunity. This site is published from Prince George, BC, by May Cheung. May wants to provide information about Palm devices, especially to Palm users who are new or having problems. She’s succeeding in providing the information, but the presentation would really use some help.
First of all, is this a blog or isn’t it? I don’t have a problem with people who use blog software to create non-blog sites – quite the opposite. But this site is just confusing. There are dates – sometimes – and other elements that are commonly found on blogs, but frequently this are strangely integrated in the design. For example, there is a link to a contact form at the bottom of most posts that implies that is the correct way to leave a comment, even though the permalink pages give you a way to comment on a specific post. Confusing! So I’d start with a cleanup of the elements, and MORE WHITE SPACE!
I think this site would really be with the addition of a strong visual element at the top of the page that isn’t text. The stock houses have tons of great photos of Palm devices in use, and that would be a good place to start if there is no budget for a logo.
Those super-long sidebars have got to go.
Too often, web designers give-up on building user friendly UIs because they lack the JavaScript skills to make it happen. That’s because developers needed to be knee-deep in code to implement Ajax functionality in AIR applications. But, with a new set of Ajax development power tools—including Dreamweaver and off-the-shelf Ajax components—you can build rich and powerful user interfaces in Ajax with no JavaScript coding. In a huge step forward for designers and developers who don’t want to get their hands dirty with Ajax and JavaScript, Dreamweaver extensions can now be easily added to a page and configured simply using property editors. In less than 5 mins we’ll give a basic web application a complete makeover with Ajax components that really jump off the page!
1.MRI takes pictures of the internal anatomy in the living human. Describe the principles behind the technique in a form that is accessible to the average Joe with no math, physics or engineering background.
2.Describe that MRI is very versatile – it can take pictures not only of anatomy, but also image the thinking brain (Functional MRI or fMRI) – what areas of the brain are activated when we do different thinking tasks.
3.Describe that MRI can image the beating heart, and measure motion within the heart wall (this is tagged MRI).
4.Describe that MRI can take pictures of orientation of fibers via diffusion tensor MRI. This allows researchers to look into fiber organization. Show pictures.
5.Describe some of the image analysis applications of these pictures – how they are being used to quantify normal growth and development, and disease.
