Tivo is probably the best DVR available - I prefer it to the cable company’s DVR. It not only allows you to record specific programs, but you can keep a wish list open so TiVo will record anything with things on your wish list — you can get all episodes of a series with the season pass, and you can have TiVo automatically record things you might like based on your ratings for other programs you’ve already rated. The downside: you have to subscribe to the TiVo services, which means an ongoing fee.
