  • Maxwell’s Museum of Technology…Tubes and transistors
Electronics Engineer, Color Scientist, Teacher, Speaker

There are almost endless debates about tubes vs. transistors in the audio reproduction field. Most of these are based on subjective listening tests. The URL: below does a very good job of explaining why tubes and transistors sound different. My personal opinion is that when you design the circuit very carefully, they both can produce very accurate sound. However, when you over drive them, most people prefer the sound of the faults when tubes are used. In the digital age it is vital that you never over drive an A /D concerter. There is no reason to do this with digital because digital has more dynamic range than analog recording systems.
