  • Editing Tips
    Producer/Editor/Shooter, Greedy Productions Ltd.

1)Using transitions-Using a transition such as a wipe or a push is more of a stylistic choice than a rule of editing. A good editor should be able to tell the story of the scene with straight cuts or if need be, a simple dissolve and shouldn’t rely on transitions to progress the action.

2)Jump cut & bad cuts-A jump cut is when part of the shot is cut and the two remaining pieces of the shot, when watched in sequence, will jump from one to the other. This can be a stylistic choice that quickly progresses time but it can also be jarring for the viewer. A bad cut is simply that, a bad cut. Cutting on movement that doesn’t match up is an example of a bad cut.

3)Action Axis-the 180 degree rule-Two people in the same scene should always have the same left/right relationship to each other. If you cut to a shot that is from behind (a reverse angle) then you have crossed the action axis. This can make it confusing for the viewer.

4)Color Correction-Mixed lighting will produce an undesirable look for you film. Try to match each shot by adjusting the black/white levels, brightness and contrast and color balance.

5)Building a sequence-Take these principles into account when edit your masterpiece!
