Episode #119

Installing Fiber

I am going to build a new house in Hawaii by myself in the next few months. I was wondering what type of Fiber optic cable I could used to be sure that it would be compatible with future growth. I know we’re a ways off, but this seems to be a good time to install it in my walls for hookup in the future.

At this point it’s probably not worth installing fiber into your walls - the cost of fiber switches, routers, and computer interfaces is very high and I doubt we’ll see them in home use for some time. You be better off installing high grade shielded cat-6 or 6a ethernet cables into your home. These cables are capable of gigabit and even 10Gbps networking, and they should be enough for some time.
