Episode #119

Virus Spread

Is it possible to copy/save files to another hard drive as a limited user in XP Pro.? If I create a user account, limited or with Admin rights, should that account be infected with a virus or spy ware, will that actually affect the XP O/S, or am I able to safely delete the account and create another, as if nothing was wrong, in other words Leo, is a user account, limited or with Admin rights, separate from the computer administrator?

Colin, Moe, VIC

Viruses and spyware do not respect account boundaries - they can and will propagate to other accounts, however, they can’t get to places you don’t have access to. That’s why it’s safer to run as a limited user. If you’re a limited user you can’t write to other accounts, and neither can viruses running under your login. However, there are bugs and security holes which can “escalate” permissions and give viruses additional access. In general, if you have a virus on one account it’s safest to assume the entire drive is infectd.
