  • Real-time interactive fluid simulations
    PhD Student, SFU

The computational power of the latest generation of computer game consoles have allowed dynamic physical simulations to enhance the gaming experience. Current 3d computer fluid simulations, such as those in movies, however, are too intensive to do in real-time on current hardware. Our research is in new mathematics to create a good real-time approximation to fluid simulation for computer games.

    1) Challenges of computing real-time incompressible fluids
    -what’s incompressible
    -why is it challenging
    2) Current methods
-real-time fluids done with smooth particle hydrodynamics (heres the video), fast but compressible
-cool movie stuff uses different methods that aren’t fast enough, but are accurate
    3) Research Plan
-research new mathematics to use designer algorithms
    -Fast Multipole Method- quick overview?

  • VoIP it Up
    LabRat, www.labrats.tv

Voice Over IP is steadily taking a bigger share of the telephony market, and no wonder — the price per call is a lot less expensive when it goes over the Internet, and in some cases the call is absolutely free. A number of manufacturers have rushed into this space, and we got our hands on a few new VoIP-ready gadgets.

    Ipevo Solo
    www.ipevo.com
    $169
If you’re looking for a straight-up Skype phone, the Ipevo Solo is a great choice: it connects directly to your network via Ethernet cable (and it has a pass-through so you don’t have to lose a 10/100 connection), and has a good-sized color LCD screen on the base that allows you to navigate through your Skype contacts, add new ones and manage the ones you already have. The downside — the handset is corded, which means you can’t wander too far from the base while you’re on a call.

GE 28310 Skype DECT 6.0 Cordless Phone
    www.ge.com/phones
    $180
This PC-free Skype phone handles both Skype and landline calls, and asks you which method you’d like to use for the call when you press the green call button. This phone is split into a base station and a wireless handset with a charger station, which means you can wander around the house while you’re on a call. There’s a small colour screen on the handset, allowing you to see your contact list, add new contacts and manage the ones you already have. There are connections on the back of the base station for both phone and Ethernet, but there’s not a lot else on the base station — just a red light that blinks every so often… a bit more feedback would have been nice, but undoubtedly this base station is meant to be tucked away out of sight anyhow.

    Globarange BB-GT1540C
    Panasonic
    $130
The marketing material for the Globarange BB-GT1540C says it’s the last phone you’ll ever have to buy, which is a lofty claim…and probably a premature one, unfortunately. It’s definitely got a lot going for it: the ability to do regular phone calls (or POTS, if you prefer), as well as the ability to do VoIP calls too….and add to that a wireless handset, and a base station that records your phone messages digitally. The real problem here is that the Globarange series uses the JOIP service for VoIP calls, instead of the more widespread Skype service. That means you’ll need to have a JOIP subscriber on the other end of the connection if you want your phone calls to be free…and all other VOIP calls requires you to subscribe to a JOIP service plan. That’s great if you’re buying a pair of these and sending the other one to a far-away relative, but no so hot if you were hoping for something a bit more widespread.

    - Bridging the digital divide, put technology in the hands of the less fortunate.
    - "Unlock Your Block" - Internet access should be a utility, like water or heat.
    - I'll would bring in a unit, and explain in layman’s terms what it does, but really emphasize what we’re delivering—free wifi to anybody who wants it, we want to blanket Vancouver with free wifi.
    - Community portals - what they are and why they make this project extra cool.
    - Put the call out to business owners for help. Describe exactly what they need to offer in terms of roof space, power and/or a Web connection.
