SEGMENT OVERVIEW and Web Ready Material
This segment is a look at some of the ways that I stretched my time, space, and budget to create my online show dotBoom, and made it look like I had a large crew, a lot of money, and an ocean of time. We’ll look at how to get props and sets to look good on the cheap, how to plan out a complicated, multi-month shoot in your spare time, and more.

    Seagate FreeAgent Go
    www.Seagate.com
    $100 - 150
Available in capacities of 80, 120 and 160 gigabytes, the FreeAgent Go portable drives are designed to connect to your computer via USB 2.0. Like previous portable Seagate drives, this one comes with a USB cable that has two connectors: use the Power+Data connector with computers that provide enough power on the USB bus to power up the drive, but use the Power Only connector too if you need a bit more power to get things up and running. This plastic-cased drive is a bit more light-weight than previous Seagate portables, but it’s also a bit more fragile because of that. The FreeAgent software that comes with the drive only works on Windows machines, but Mac users can reformat the drive and use it as a plain old external drive.

    Western Digital Passport
    www.westerndigital.com
    $90–200
There are a lot of choices in the WD Passport lineup: 120, 160 and 250 GB versions of the drive in black, white, red and green, and 60 and 80 GB versions in black only. One slight downside: the drive only comes with a standard USB cable, which means that out of the box it will only work with computers with good bus power on USB — those with underpowered machines will have to buy the optional accessory cable that allows additional power. The drives come with WD Sync software pre-loaded, allowing Windows users to back up their data to the drive, complete with encryption. Of course, users who just want to drag and drop certain files can do that too, and the drive is formatted for use with both Windows and Mac.

    Memorex Ultra TravelDrive
    www.memorex.com
    $100–150
On the hardware side, Memorex has been better known for flash drives and small mini-drive based units, but the Ultra TravelDrive is a full-on portable hard drive complete with one-touch backup button around the back. It comes with a two cables — one for USB and the other one to get additional power from a second USB port when there’s not enough juice on the USB bus. The drives can also change to suite your mood - each comes with three coloured faceplates so you can switch between a basic charcoal colour and two other bright choices. The drives come in 80, 120 and 160 gigabyte capacities.

    Maxtor OneTouch 4 Mini
    www.maxtorsolutions.com
    $89–139
Available in 80, 120 and 160 GB capacities, the OneTouch4 Mini is the newest portable from Maxtor, connecting via USB 2.0 (with an extra prong on the cable for extra power from a second USB port, if needed). The drive comes with software for backing up your computer, as well as the option to
