How do i burn 100′s of photos from my ext hard drive to a cd or dvd. does each photo have to be opened individually?

This is a job for one of the photo library programs like Picasa, Adobe Photoshop Album, or iPhoto on the Mac. Not only do they let you organize and enhance your photos, they offer great backup options. Picasa is free and does an excellent job of backup.
If you’re just backing up the photos it should be as simple as selecting all the photos and dragging them into the burn window in one batch. If you’re trying to build a slideshow, you should be able to import them in as a batch too…so there should be no reason to open them one by one.
