Episode #116

Rural High speed internet

Hi there, I am in a very rural community (population 400) and only have dialup. The phone company says that I am on a carrier so I can only get 26.4kbs when I dialup. Now, it was only a week ago that Roger’s Cable said that cable is now available in our area, but if I want highspeed out here, I will need 25 more homes to be interested before it would be profitable for them to bring it out here. There are only 14 homes on my road, but most of them would like highspeed. Highspeed is currently only 0.9 kilometers away and it has been that far away for more than 5 years. Couldn’t I get cable and use that for internet? The cable company told me no, but didnt there used to be cable internet? I also looked at satellite, but it’s $1000 to install it. I also need highspeed for my sister (who lives next door) for our family business. She needs it so that the streaming video from the security system at the store so she can stay home longer with the kids. What can I do to get highspeed out here? I need advice!! Thanks.

This is a big issue in all rural areas, certainly everywhere in north america, and the problem is, you know, I think what has to happen is government has to realize that just as electrification of the rural areas was very important, you know, 80 years ago, 90 years ago, I think the "internetification," which is a terrible word but the right idea, of rural areas is equally important. If you're not online nowadays, you can't -- you're limited in how you could participate, even in government, but certainly as to the information you can get, commerce, it's just good for the country. So I think we need to call on our governmental leaders to really force this issue because, I'll tell you, business isn't gonna do it.

It's too sparsely populated. There's not enough money for them to do it. Now, there are some technologies coming that'll make it a little more affordable, you know, and they're not gonna string cable or wires, but they might do something wireless like this. This is wimax, and everybody's going crazy over wimax right now, w-i-m-a-x. It's a long distance wi-fi that does promise to wire rural or wireless, I guess, rural areas. The issue with this, ironically, is it's being rolled out where? In metropolitan areas because there's more money to be made.

So that's why I think what we need to do is to write your local representatives, write your national representatives, tell them "we want some sort of support, governmental support, governmental encouragement, maybe even requirement for wiring the rural areas.

Until we have high speed everywhere, it's holding the country back. I think it's really, really important, whether it's here in Canada, whether it's in the U.S., it's Australia, anywhere in the world. This is an important issue. So, yeah, there are technologies out there, but I think it's gonna take a little nudge to make it work.
