Episode #113
What does the team think about the “OpenMoko” project Linux SmartPhone and it’s (apparently first) implementation in the (soon to be released) Neo 1973 handset? Should I hold off from buying an iPhone and say “hello Moko” instead?
Tim, Sydney, NSW
There are several open source cell phone projects, including OpenMoko, but it remains to be seen if any of them can make a competitive product. The open source community doesn’t have a history of hardware manufacturing. I wouldn’t wait until then, frankly, but neither would I buy an iPhone in a country where it’s not sold. Apple has been very swift and harsh in its response to iPhone unlockers.
