Episode #112

Compressing Photos

I’ve recently scanned old precious photos that I don’t have the negatives for. I’ve saved them in the .tif format instead of .jpg because of research I did on-line. But I’m not a 100% about LZW compresion for tif, so I made one folder with uncompressed tif photos and an exact same folder but all the photos were saved in tif with LZW compression. Before I backup one of these folders on a cd, I want to make sure that LZW is truly a lossless compression. My research on-line has not revealed an outright obvious answer. Love the show.

Good news, LZW is a lossless compression and your TIFs are full quality. But note, the TIF format can use a variety of different compression schemes, some ARE lossy, so make sure you’re specifying LZW compression.
