Right-Clicking

Is there a way I can change the right-click preferences in Windows XP to use another button on the keyboard?

Hamish, Ottawa, ON

There’s a free program, Autohotkey (www.autohotkey.com), that will let you remap the right-click to any other key.

The caller mentioned using MacOS in the original question submitted via the website, so I’m wondering if this is related to using Windows XP from within Parallels or BootCamp? (Because there’s no right-click on a mouse, that means that people would have trouble triggering the right-click from within Windows.

The quickest solution is to replace the Mac mouse with one that features a right-click button. There’s a preconception among many users that Mac doesn’t have right-click functionality because Macs used to ship with only one button, but there’s been right-click functionality built into MacOS for a while. Users with a single-button mouse can hold down the Option button while clicking to bring up menu options, but all you have to do is plus in any Windows-compatible mouse and use the right-click button in order to access the right-click menu in either Mac or Windows.

For any users who are running on a recently Powerbook, a Macbook or a Macbook Pro, there’s a way to access the right-click menu simply by holding two fingers on the trackpad and clicking the button. If that doesn’t currently work on your notebook, check the System Preferences menu under the Keyboard&Mouse option: under the Trackpad tab there’s a checkbox that says “Place two fingers on trackpad and click button for secondary click” — ensure that is checked off, and then you should be able to right-click with the two-finger touch…if it doesn’t appear, your Mac notebook is too old to make use of this function.
