The Aptana open source project provides web developers with a fantastic integrated development environment (IDE) that can be installed and run on Windows, Mac OSX and most varieties of Linux. Aptana is a relatively mature product that is based on the popular Eclipse Java IDE. Aptana is not an editor for the feint of heart. It is a fully featured text editor to write code in. It is not a wysiwyg editor. It requires that you know how to hand code your HTML, CSS and JavaScript.

Once you download and install Aptana you have a very complete editor that supports the HTML, CSS, and JavaScript languages. There is also build in support for many of the popular JavaScript libraries like Prototype, DOJO, and the YUI. You can also install plugins that make it easier to develop Adobe AIR applications, Ruby on Rails web applications, and applications for the Apple iPhone.

What do we mean by support for these features? In most cases we are talking about code completion and hinting. The HTML, CSS and JavaScript languages have many different elements, attributes, selectors, and functions that are hard to remember and keep track of. Code completion helps us use these language features by showing us hints as we type the parts of the language we know. Code completion is a feature of Aptana that will supercharge you productivity while writing code for the web.

Another productivity feature offered by Aptana is a rich snippet library. In the IDE you can navigate to the Snippets panel and easily insert common snippets of code into documents. You can even create your own, which allows you to personalize and customize your workflow within Aptana. For example, if you find yourself typing the same block of code often, you can turn that block of code into a snippet so you don’t have to type it over and over again.

The final piece of Aptana that makes it stand out from many of the other web editors is built-in support for reading and writing to FTP and SFTP sites. Chances are your web projects are hosted on a server somewhere on the internet. Aptana gives you an integrated way to move files to and from your web servers using either the FTP or SFTP protocols. With Aptana you will never need to open a separate FTP client again!
