Episode #101

DNS with dynamic IP from ISP

I’m wanting to setup my own email server (exchange) and web server for a small business that i am looking at starting. As it is now I’m with Shaw for an ISP in Winnipeg and i don’t have a static IP address. SO what would be the easiest way for me to accomplish setting this up? i’ve looked at EasyDNS and couple other services that i think will allow me to do this with out having to spend a ton of money monthly paying for a higher service to get a static IP. My internal network is 6 machines and 2 notebooks behind a linksys wireless router which was handing out my ip’s but now my D/C will act as my DHCP server. Basically what i need is a way to have DNS work without a static IP from my ISP so that i can run my own mail server and web server. Thanks, P.S. Love the show!!!

Companies like www.dyndns.com solve this problem for you by providing an intermediary that updates your address as it changes. It works very will. You will probably want to DMZ your server box in your router to give it unfettered access to the web.
